Hairstyles today, are, to put it bluntly, boring. Yes, we have all the funky colors going on. People have pink, green, and purple hair. But honestly, I don’t think it takes all that much creativity to just color your hair. When it comes to the actual styles, we had some interesting looks, back in the day.
The Farrah Fawcett
In the 1970s and 80s, Farrah Fawcett was a global phenomenon. Her hair was almost as famous as she was. Girls across the country got up at obscenely early hours to wash, blow-dry, and then put their hair in hot rollers to achieve this iconic look.
The Dorothy Hamill
Dorothy Hamill was the perky, Olympic ice skater with a spunky little hairdo almost as famous as Farrah’s. With a gorgeous face and stick-straight hair, she could pull off the hairstyle that was also known as the wedge. For the rest of us, however, a really short bowl cut didn’t always look so great.
Crimping
80s babes everywhere laid claim to a variety of crazing crimping styles. These styles looked like a cascade of electric waves flowing down your back. This meant millions of people everywhere wanted the best crimping irons for birthdays and Christmas.
Shag
Whether it was shag hair or shag carpeting, shag was a big deal back in the day. This style usually meant having lots of layers. If you didn’t have access to a good stylist, the shag had the potential to go terribly wrong. Your shag might look similar to a seven-year-old who got scissors happy with a do-it-yourself haircut.
Mullet
The mullet was also a multi-layered haircut. It was normally cut shorter along the top and front and left longer in the back. This was basically a shag on steroids.
The great thing about hair is that no matter what you do to it, it usually grows back. With all these extreme hairstyles, it was a good thing we eventually got a “do-over” when our dreams of gorgeous hair didn’t turn out so well, back in the day.
